Papers in Anthropology was a significant scholarly journal in the field of anthropology published by the students and faculty in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Oklahoma (OU). Its first issue was published in 1960 and the final issue (24.2) appeared in 1984.

While Papers in Anthropology was the house journal for the OU Department of Anthropology, contributors to the journal included a range of scholars beyond the department itself. The journal’s subject matter was similarly broad but, like the department that published it, the journal gave special emphasis to projects focused on Oklahoma. As a venue in which many ethnographic, ethnohistorical and ethnological works related to the peoples of Oklahoma (particularly native communities within the state) appeared, Papers in Anthropology remains a valuable resource for the study of Oklahoma cultures and cultural histories. The Papers in Anthropology Project aims to digitize the full run of the journal’s issues and to make this content accessible, with proper metadata indexing, in a open access digital repository. It is anticipated that this project will be completed during the first half of 2008. When the journal is available online, a link will be provided from this site.

Beyond making a valuable, but generally inaccessible, resource widely available for the use of students, scholars and source communities, the Papers in Anthropology Project is a proof of concept exercise in which we are testing hardware, software, digital infrastructure and work flow systems in preparation for additional digitization and access projects.
